kanamaluka (Level 4, Grade 1) - DIGITAL STUDIO LICENSE
Composed by Tasmanian, Michela Pinner, this piece portrays the swirling dark waters of kanamaluka*. Long before it was named the Tamar River, the traditional owners, the letteremairrener people, held the estuary as a special place and source of food. The movement of the water can be heard in the flowing ostinato pattern between the two hands. The wind moves across the surface of the water as dusk approaches...

*kanamaluka/River Tamar in palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines, with thanks to the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre.
The composer acknowledges the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first inhabitants of Country. I pay respect to the palawa peoples who are the traditonal custodians of lutruwita (Tasmania) land, sea and waterways.
They cared and protected Country for thousands of years. They knew this land, they lived on the land and they died on these lands. I honour them.
